Government distributes over UAH 1.6 billion in budget funds for to support the proper maintenance of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the implementation of measures for its decommissioning

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has amended the Procedure for the Use of Funds Allocated in the State Budget for Maintaining the Safety of the Power Units and the Ukryttia Facility, as well as for Measures Related to the Decommissioning of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

The relevant Government Resolution No. 237 of February 25, 2026, in particular, provides for expenditures in 2026 to maintain the three Chernobyl NPP power units, the Ukryttia (Shelter) facility, and existing spent nuclear fuel storage facilities and radioactive waste repositories in a safe condition, as well as reimbursement of the Pension Fund of Ukraine’s expenses for the payment of pensions granted on preferential terms.

Separate funds are allocated for the decommissioning and partial dismantling of certain systems and components of the Chernobyl NPP power units, as well as for organizational and technical measures related to the management, operation, maintenance, and repair of systems that will continue to operate, and for ensuring safety control.
