Despite the war, Ukrainian-American cooperation in the energy sector has achieved significant results, and the restoration and reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy sector opens up prospects for its expansion. This was underlined by Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko in an interview with the Atlantic Council.

“We have done some incredible things with our American partners. For example, Westinghouse, together with Ukrainian specialists, produced a new type of fuel for VVER-440 reactors in a year and a half. This will allow us to end rosatom’s monopoly, because until now they were the only ones to produce fuel for this type of reactor,” the Minister said.

German Galushchenko noted that the newly developed fuel was loaded into one of the units of the Ukrainian NPP.

The head of the Energy Ministry stressed that this development was very important not only for Ukraine, but also for European countries, which were still dependent on russian technologies. Moreover, it opens up the possibility for the civilised world to impose sanctions on the russian nuclear industry.

The Minister recalled the successful cooperation with the American company Holtec, which helped to complete the construction of the Central Spent Fuel Storage Facility in Ukraine and put it into operation. A number of contracts have also been signed with American partners to start the development and production of small modular reactors in Ukraine.

German Galushchenko noted that the restoration and development of Ukraine’s energy sector opened up new business opportunities.

“Ukraine will become the energy hub of Europe, and American companies can play a leading role in this transformation. By coming to Ukraine, companies can implement their most advanced developments and show them to the world,” the Minister stressed.
