Ukraine and Slovakia to deepen cooperation in education and science
On 5 November 2026, the fourth round of intergovernmental consultations between Ukraine and the Slovak Republic took place in Lviv. As part of the event, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Andrii Butenko held a bilateral meeting with Minister of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic Tomáš Drucker.
Following the consultations, the parties signed two documents aimed at developing educational and scientific partnership between the two countries.
"It is important to us that cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia delivers concrete results for pupils, students, teachers and researchers. The documents signed today open up new opportunities for language learning, the development of academic partnerships and the training of specialists in strategically important fields. Our teams will now work to turn these agreements into practical projects aimed at developing education, science and the human capital of both countries," said Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Andrii Butenko.
Establishing bilingual gymnasiums in Ukraine and Slovakia
One of the key outcomes was the signing of the Agreement on the Establishment and Operation of a Bilingual Ukrainian-English Gymnasium in the Slovak Republic and a Bilingual Slovak-English Gymnasium in Ukraine.
The Agreement provides for the development of new educational opportunities for children in both countries and for deeper cooperation between the Ukrainian and Slovak education systems.
On the Ukrainian side, it is planned to introduce Slovak language learning at the Irpin Lyceum. During the meeting, the parties discussed practical steps for implementing the Agreement, including the possibility of engaging a Slovak teacher to conduct online classes at the initial stage.
Cooperation in science and training specialists for the energy sector
The second document was the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in Human Resources Development, Education, Research and Science for the Energy Sector.
The document lays the foundation for deepening partnership between Ukrainian and Slovak universities and research institutions. Promising areas include joint research, academic mobility for students and teachers, exchange of expertise, and training of highly qualified specialists for the energy sector.
During the consultations, the parties also discussed further practical steps to launch joint educational and research initiatives.
Following the meeting, Ukraine and Slovakia confirmed their interest in further developing bilateral partnership and implementing joint educational and scientific initiatives.
