Fellow compatriots!
Five years ago, massacre took place on Maidan Nezalezhnosti Square - a regime that had lost any moral and legal fibers, had shot its citizens. Thus, the Government tried to halt the aspirations of Ukrainians to have fundamental human rights and to live in a democratic European country. The regime was struggling to steer Ukraine back into the Russian fold.
Once again, Ukrainians had demonstrated to the whole world that they are a freedom-loving European nation, which would stand against the dictatorship and was ready to defend its own values against terrible threats. Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred by courage and at the expense of their lives prevented Ukraine’s sliding into the darkness of authoritarianism and barbarism.
Evil deeds, like those that took place on the Maidan five years ago, are a warning to our society, how far in its odious thirst can come the corrupted political class dependent on the Kremlin's instructions. Therefore, only a fair, democratic and European Ukraine with a strong civil society will be an ironclad guarantee that such recidives in our history will never repeat again. Our common obligation to the Heroes of Heavenly Hundred is to make transformations that will bring Ukraine closer to a fair and prosperous European society, in which all citizens are equal before the law and the state creates the necessary conditions for realization of the potential of each person.
I believe that by joint efforts we will be able to achieve our goal. I am convinced that the consolidation of the course towards Euro-Atlantic integration in the Constitution of Ukraine will make our way to the European Union and NATO irreversible. Russian aggression leaves us no choice. I want to place a special emphasis on the fact that we have chosen not only the path of further development of Ukraine, but also elemental survival of our country, our values, our nation, culture and language with this Russian imperialism never wanted to put up with. We made our choice and will always be staunchest to defend it.
I call on all Ukrainians to observe a moment of silence in tribute to the cherished memory of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and to light a memorial candle!
Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to the Heroes!
