Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna and UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi agreed to strengthen cooperation to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees from Ukraine.
During the meeting on July 8, Olha Stefanishyna and Filippo Grandi discussed the urgent needs of Ukrainians affected by the war and the help that the UNCHR can provide.
"Approximately 12 million people in Ukraine were forced to leave their homes because of the war. At the same time, over 2 million people have already returned to Ukraine from abroad, and there are many of our citizens who also want to do so. Today, the Government is working on a strategy to help these people return as safely as possible and ensure their basic needs, as many have had their homes or entire communities destroyed. The experience and assistance of the UN Refugee Agency are very relevant for Ukraine today," said Olha Stefanishyna.
She noted that there is currently an urgent need to restore critical infrastructure, including hospitals and schools, to resume of electricity, water, and gas supplies, as well as ensure preparation for the winter period.
For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi confirmed that their surveys also show that many Ukrainians are eager to return home, so it is important to assess their priority needs.
Among other things, the Deputy Prime Minister informed about the introduction of Rescue Centers in Ukraine, where people can receive comprehensive help in one place, including medical, legal, psychological, etc. The first such Center was already opened in Zaporizhia. The UN Refugee Agency has agreed to support this initiative in the future.
