Prime Minister assures the Gov’t mission is to prevent violations of road traffic regulations
The essential objective of all law enforcement agencies as well as the local authorities is to maintain traffic safety, reduce road accidents and deaths, and prevent violations.
This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman during a meeting of the Coordinating Council for road traffic safety.
According to the statistical data, the systemic approach and vigorous investment in traffic safety, the implementation of the program "500-500-1000" for the construction of security islands and safe pedestrian crossings, the change of state building standards towards the strict adherence to traffic safety requirements have yielded their result. Thus, in 2018, the total number of accidents reduced by almost 8%, of which the number of accidents with victims - by more than 10%.
At that, road traffic injury and deaths rates still remain high. Last year, 3350 people died in road accidents. And the main causes of death and injury was the human error: exceeding the safe speed limit (every third accident), illegal driving maneuvers, violation of the regulations of crossing the intersections, non-compliance with the distance and violation of the rules of driving along pedestrian crossings.
It is not without reason that Volodymyr Groysman described this situation as "an undeclared war", which brings pain and grief and requires enhanced responsible leadership and clear coordination of all actions.
"Our task is to coordinate all services and local authorities. It is crucial to ensure that all measures are taken and all the participants and pedestrians could feel safe", said Volodymyr Groysman. "We are losing people as a result of the senseless war on the roads. It brings grief and pain to many Ukrainian families ... And on our joint work depends how fast we will manage in reducing the tragic indicators."
The Head of Government set the task: to reduce mortality rate by at least one third in 2020. "We invest in new roads. Decentralization provides opportunities for local authorities to invest in the road network in towns and districts. But we must remember that security issues are extremely important for us", said Volodymyr Groysman. "We also remember that it is necessary to ensure control over observance of the rules of the traffic safety. We must act in a preventive way. Our task is not to get a fine, but to prevent violations."
The Prime Minister called on all authorities, mayors to interact and provide new quality. He noted that on the ground everyone knows about the dangerous areas of road networks. And it is there that intensified attention and preventive measures are required. "We must protect people and save lives," added Volodymyr Groysman.
