Ministry of Health continues to strengthen Ukrainian hospitals to operate in the face of possible blackouts

Ministry of Health of Ukraine, posted 11 April 2024 18:52

The Ministry of Health continues to equip Ukrainian hospitals with power generators to make them more resilient to possible power outages and to operate in the face of possible blackouts.

Currently, Ukrainian medical facilities are equipped with 11,139 generators for uninterrupted power supply. In the event of a blackout, the power equipment will be activated and supply electricity to the grid.

Thus, hospitals will continue to operate and medical staff will provide medical care to patients.

In addition, other solutions are being actively implemented in Ukraine. In particular, hospitals are being equipped with an alternative and environmentally friendly source of electricity - solar panels and batteries - to help medical facilities operate in critical situations.

Currently, more than 60 Ukrainian healthcare facilities have solar stations with panels. Many of them have batteries that accumulate energy. They were installed at the expense of various programmes, charitable foundations, foreign governments, etc.

Such solutions are currently being implemented thanks to the cooperation of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine with the European Energy Society's Ray of Hope programme, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the governments of Japan and Croatia, the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities, and Naftogaz. Charitable and public organisations, including Energy Act for Ukraine, Ecoclub, Solar Energy Association of Ukraine, etc. are also involved in the process.

It should also be noted that many hospital managers and local authorities are currently working on their own to create conditions for stable operation of medical facilities in the event of emergencies. Thanks to this reinforcement, hospitals will continue to operate and provide the necessary medical care to patients even in the case of emergency power outages or complete blackouts.

We are grateful to all the partners who contributed to ensuring the autonomy of medical institutions. This cooperation has allowed hospitals to provide medical services even in extreme conditions.

Background Information

The implementation of the offsetting model for payments for electricity generated by solar power plants is currently being finalised. Relevant amendments were made to the Law of Ukraine On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine on Improving Energy Payments in 2023. A total of 200 solar stations are planned to be installed in Ukrainian healthcare facilities by the end of 2024.
