Yulia Svyrydenko: Government temporarily bans export of unprocessed timber

Following a trip to Rivne region and at the request of businesses, the Government has taken a decision to temporarily ban the export of unprocessed timber.

“This is a necessary step to look after people during the winter, preserve the operations of our enterprises, and reduce the burden on the environment,” stressed the Prime Minister.

The volume of logging in Ukraine has fallen substantially since the full-scale invasion. Enterprises that could be operating are either idle or running at minimal capacity due to a shortage of timber. The military also needs it for its requirements. The availability of timber affects life in rural communities, where firewood is a key resource for heating in winter.

Furthermore, the war has caused significant damage to the environment. Some forests are temporarily occupied or damaged by combat operations. Therefore, exporting timber would place additional strain on the environment.

“The decision provides for the licensing of exports – a zero quota until the end of the year. We are continuing to develop further steps for a systemic resolution of the timber shortage,” the Head of Government said.
