Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, together with Ukrzaliznytsia, expands pilot project to provide high-speed internet access on long-distance trains
Wi-Fi has been launched in test mode on the flagship train Hutsulshchyna No. 95/96 Kyiv – Rakhiv. Passengers in all 22 carriages have access to the network. Each passenger is entitled to 10 minutes of free internet access to test the service and send urgent messages. Full access to high-speed internet during the trip costs 120 UAH per day with no traffic restrictions, with the first 5 GB provided without any speed restrictions. Payment is made online by credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
The technology is provided by modern Starlink equipment, which has been tested on some of Ukrzaliznytsia's diplomatic routes and has proven its effectiveness in difficult conditions. The equipment for the Hutsulshchyna train carriages was provided at the partner's expense without any investment from Ukrzaliznytsia.
If the service is in stable demand, Ukrzaliznytsia will hold a transparent competition to select a supplier to scale this project to other trains.
"Access to communication on the go is a basic need for modern people. We want Ukrainians to be able to work, study, communicate with their families, and stay connected regardless of their route. Expanding Wi-Fi access on long-distance trains is another step towards creating a modern, customer-oriented transport infrastructure," said
Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine – Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Oleksii Kuleba.
At the same time, together with the Ministry of Digital Transformation, we are launching a separate project to equip more than 300 carriages of frontline trains of social importance with free access to high-speed internet. The project is scheduled to be rolled out in 2026.
It is also worth mention that Ukrzaliznytsia, with the support of the Ministry of Digital Transformation, has already equipped all 16 of its Intercity+ trains with high-speed internet access.
