Ministry for Communities and Territories Development: Rules for the transportation of animals on trains updated

At the initiative of Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development has updated the Rules for the transportation of passengers, baggage and cargo to make rail travel more comfortable and inclusive. In particular, the changes relate to the liberalization of the conditions for the transportation of pets:

Big-sized dogs (at above 45 cm height) can now travel in all types of carriages (including SC, RIC and Intercity+) if the passenger has purchased all the seats in the corresponding compartment or a block of seats in one row in Intercity+ and Intercity.

Service dogs of military personnel can travel free of charge in any carriage - they must be muzzled and be kept on a leash.

Carriers for animals do not have to be rigid: bags, backpacks or other means of transportation with a waterproof absorbent bottom are allowed.

Small-sized animals (including dogs up to 45 cm height) can be in the compartment without a carrier - provided that all seats are purchased.

In all cases, passengers must have veterinary documents and a ticket for the animal, as well as a leash and muzzle for large-sized dogs. In case of allergies or discomfort of other passengers, the train crew will help to organize a change of place within the train.

Prior to updating the rules, Ukrzaliznytsia consulted with experts from the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, the animal protection organization UAnimals, and transport experts from partner countries.

The updated rules have already entered into force and apply to all rail transportation on the territory of Ukraine.

This is another step towards creating a modern railway system that takes into account the needs of all passengers, including those traveling with pets.
