Purified drinking water shall be supplied to Mykolaiv in spring 2026: Ministry for Communities and Territories Development
The first stage of water purification in Mykolaiv will be launched in January 2026, after the completion of the main construction work on the treatment facilities.
By the end of 2025, the main construction work on the treatment facilities shall be completed in Mykolaiv, and the first stage of water purification will be launched. The system shall be fully operational in spring 2026 and provide the city with potable water, according to Artem Rybchenko, Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development, during a meeting with journalists on December 8, in Mykolaiv.
The Mykolaiv water pipeline includes not only the construction of a new pipeline, but also the installation of modern treatment systems, the introduction of automated water quality control, and the provision of stable operation in emergency conditions.
"The Mykolaiv water pipeline is a completely new engineering system, created from scratch. The project is unique for Ukraine because it combines a comprehensive approach and a high level of automation. We completed the construction of the new pipeline in less than six months, and we have been building the treatment systems since September. This is an extremely fast pace. This project has already become an example for other Ukrainian cities and for international partners who support the modernization of critical infrastructure. We need to complete the treatment system in order to ensure a centralized supply of drinking water," said Artem Rybchenko.
Several key projects are being implemented in parallel to ensure that Mykolaiv receives clean drinking water.
A new preliminary water treatment plant is being built in the city. It is being financed with part of the funds saved during the construction of the water pipeline. The complex includes a reagent dosing station, disc filtration, treated water tanks, and electrical infrastructure. The main work is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, 80% of which is already complete.
In Nova Odesa, construction is continuing on a station for complete biological and mechanical wastewater treatment with a capacity of 200 m³/day. It will operate using modern MakBoxPro-200 technology and will ensure environmentally safe treatment, reduce the load on the Southern Buh River, and protect soil and groundwater. The project is 90% complete.
All water pipeline facilities meet safety requirements: cable lines are laid underground, backup generators and shelters for personnel are provided, and the equipment is capable of operating even during power outages.
The current cost of the water pipeline construction is UAH 6.3 billion, including additional work, while the initial cost was UAH 8.7 billion. According to the results of an expert assessment conducted by the Agency for Reconstruction, the project was reduced in cost by 25%. The savings were used to expand the capacity of the treatment system.
Once all the work is done, the Mykolaiv water pipeline will supply the city with drinking water, go through all the stages of preparation, and meet sanitary norms and standards.
