European Investment Bank disburses EUR 60 million for border infrastructure modernization

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is providing EUR 60 million in loan financing to Ukraine. These funds will be directed toward modernizing border crossing points along the western border—those shared with EU countries and Moldova. This marks the first project under the new "Safety and Connectivity" initiative.

"European integration begins with reliable roads and efficient logistics. Support from the EIB will help us upgrade our western border crossing points. We look forward to new terminals, improved access infrastructure, and modern customs systems. Our goal is to reduce waiting times, lower costs for businesses, and make crossing the border convenient for everyone," states Mykola Kalashnyk, Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine.

The funding will help increase border throughput capacity, accelerate the movement of cargo and passengers, and reduce logistics costs. The project includes upgrading terminals, constructing roads and waiting areas, installing sanitary facilities, and deploying modern customs equipment.

"Ukraine’s border crossing points serve as gateways to the EU, connecting businesses, people, and markets. Every obstacle removed translates into faster deliveries, more resilient supply chains, and new opportunities for Ukrainian businesses. This investment aims to preserve Ukraine’s transport connectivity, strengthen its economic resilience, and bring it closer to the EU," noted EIB Group Vice-President Karl Nehammer.

The project is being implemented with the support of the European Union under the 'Team Europe' approach. The European Commission is providing a guarantee for the loan through the Ukraine Investment Framework (UIF). The project will also be supplemented by an EU grant of EUR 6 million, along with EUR 2.5 million for technical assistance. The work will be carried out by the Agency for Restoration on roads within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
