Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, posted 16 October 2026 11:39

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the Regulations on the State Commission for Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). The document sets out the Commission's tasks, how its membership is formed, its organisational framework, its rights and responsibilities, and the requirements for its members.

The Commission will operate as a standing expert and advisory body. Its main task is to assess the risks associated with GMOs in the course of research and testing in an open system, and in the official registration of GMOs.

Approval of the Regulations is a step toward a transparent and effective GMO risk assessment system, grounded in scientific evidence and an evaluation of the potential impact on human health and the environment.

The document will also support consistent implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Placement on the Market of Genetically Modified Organisms and Products," and help bring Ukrainian legislation closer to EU approaches to GMO risk assessment.
