Ukrzaliznytsia has received 6 new Ukrainian-made railcars; by the end of the year, there will be a total of 60

Ukrzaliznytsia has received the first six new Ukrainian-made sleeper cars. The cars have already arrived in Kyiv from Kremenchuk and are being prepared for their first trip.

These are the first cars out of 100 units of rolling stock ordered in the summer of 2025 under a contract between Ukrzaliznytsia and the Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works. In total, the contract calls for the manufacture of 88 compartment cars, 7 cars for people in wheelchairs, and 5 new-generation cars with a service life extended by 20 years. In 2026, 60 new cars from this batch are expected. The total cost of the purchase is approximately UAH 6.5 billion, with funding provided from the state budget.

“These cars are an example of how state investments simultaneously improve service quality for people and strengthen the country’s economy. The Kryukiv Railway Car Building Works involves over 150 Ukrainian companies in production, including relocated firms and enterprises in frontline territories. This means thousands of jobs, tax revenues for the budget, and the development of technologies applicable far beyond railway car manufacturing. “New railcars are now a top priority, as the enemy strikes Ukrainian Railways’ rolling stock daily, attempting to weaken the logistical capabilities of the entire country,” noted Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration/Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.

The new railcars meet modern standards for comfort and accessibility. They are equipped with high-quality shelves, air conditioning systems, changing tables and baby playpens, ramps, as well as an improved battery. This allows the train crew to ensure a comfortable temperature in the compartment even before passengers board. Special attention has been paid to the details: each compartment features a chessboard, and the upper shelves include individual tables with space for a water bottle or a cup holder.

The first passengers will be able to use the new cars very soon—the railcars will enter into service as part of a new flagship train, which Ukrzaliznytsia plans to present on April 28.
