Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko met with Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine Alan Purcell and Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Ukraine James Hope.
The parties discussed the current situation in the energy sector of Ukraine, plans to restore energy infrastructure and prospects for future energy sector development.
German Galushchenko thanked for support of Ukraine in the process of synchronization with ENTSO-E and stressed that Ukraine possesses significant potential for electricity exports to Europe.
"We now plan to ramp up commercial exports. This is important for us, because there is a shortage in the electricity market due to lower levels of payment as a result of the war. On the other hand, increased exports of Ukrainian electricity will allow European countries to replace russian gas to a great extent," emphasized German Galushchenko.
He also announced Ukraine's intention to reduce gas consumption to the level of its domestic production and continue the transition to carbon-free energy. This will be facilitated by the involvement of USAID in the preparation of new energy development projects, which should begin immediately after the war ends.
German Galushchenko also stressed the need to ensure nuclear safety and deoccupation of Europe's largest Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which is currently occupied by russian troops. During the meeting, the parties also discussed sanctions against russia in the oil and gas sector.
