Ukraine and Austria discuss mutual support in elections to the Universal Postal Union

Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, Andrii Bratus, held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria to Ukraine, Martin Robert Müller.

The main topic of the meeting was mutual support between Ukraine and Austria during elections to the governing bodies of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). These elections are scheduled to take place during the 28th UPU Congress, to be held from 8 to 19 September 2025 in Dubai, UAE.

“During the Congress, elections will be held for the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council of the Universal Postal Union. Ukraine is a candidate for both bodies, and we hope for mutual support. Membership in these councils will allow us to represent national interests in shaping the rules governing international postal cooperation and to establish multilateral contacts with postal administrations of other countries,” said Andrii Bratus.

The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s priorities in the development of logistical infrastructure, including:

• Transforming the border railway network to align with EU standards;
• Upgrading port infrastructure, which is under constant attack from russia;
• Modernising international road border crossing points;
• Integrating Ukraine’s transport system into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

According to Martin Müller, the Austrian Government has an ambitious programme, and one of its priorities is comprehensive support for Ukraine, particularly in transport and logistical integration, as well as the development of infrastructure, including ports and roads. A new visit by Austrian ministers to Ukraine is expected soon, including a visit to one of the ports.

The parties also discussed humanitarian aid and Austria’s systemic support for Ukraine since the onset of russia’s full-scale invasion.

Andrii Bratus expressed gratitude to the people of Austria and Ambassador Martin Müller for the ongoing open dialogue between the two countries.
