Shoulder to Shoulder: All-Ukrainian School Leagues – a new level for mass sport development in Ukraine
Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvii Bidnyi spoke on the national United News telethon about the implementation and achievements of the “Shoulder to Shoulder: All-Ukrainian School Leagues” project.
This initiative, launched by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aims to bring sports back into school life, making it accessible to every child and engaging students in meaningful, active leisure. The project seeks to instil values of healthy living, teamwork, and unity in the younger generation, contributing to the progress of sports in Ukraine.
“Mass sport, which we are developing through this project, is the foundation for a healthy nation and, at the same time, for elite sports performance,” emphasised Matvii Bidnyi.
With around 900,000 participants from all regions, this is the largest school sports project in Ukraine’s independent history and continues to grow.
In the 2024/2025 season – the project’s second year – its programme of five sports was expanded to include handball and rugby-5, with athletics and chess added on a trial basis. Additionally, age groups were broadened, and gender balance was ensured, increasing participation by nearly a third compared to the previous year.
“We have no plans to stop. We will ensure this project reaches every student, giving them the desire and opportunity to participate,” the Minister assured.
Winners of the competitions attend a summer camp in the Carpathians, engaging in sports activities, quizzes, quests, and masterclasses. Students connect, share tournament experiences, and develop new skills.
The Minister noted that the “Shoulder to Shoulder: All-Ukrainian School Leagues” project is a strategically vital national sports programme, laying the foundation for nurturing future leaders capable of succeeding and building the country.
“This is the best investment in the future. We must foster these values in our children and create conditions for them to engage in sports and develop qualities essential for society,” stressed Matvii Bidnyi.
Alongside this, other mass and elite sports programmes are advancing, including the creation of the modern Olympic Lab science park, whose innovations will enhance the preparation of Ukrainian athletes for top-level competitions.
The Minister also highlighted youth policy efforts, including active engagement with youth organisations and the development of the State Targeted Youth Development Programme for 2026–2030. This programme will create new opportunities for active and creative young people. Matvii Bidnyi reiterated that fostering national civic identity is another key focus of the Ministry, aimed at raising a responsible younger generation and strengthening societal unity.
