On 29 January, a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at the ambassadorial level was held at NATO Headquarters with the participation of Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration and Minister of Justice of Ukraine Olha Stefanishyna.

The key topics of the meeting were the security situation in Ukraine, the implementation of the decisions of the NATO Washington Summit, and Ukraine’s progress in implementing reforms, in particular within the framework of the adapted Annual National Programme.

The Deputy Prime Minister briefed the Allies on the security situation and stressed that Ukraine’s priority needs remained air defence systems, aircraft and long-range missiles.

Olha Stefanishyna stressed the importance of ensuring the full implementation of the decisions of the NATO Washington Summit regarding Ukraine as soon as possible. She underlined the need to launch the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) initiative as soon as possible and thanked the Allies for fulfilling their financial support commitments to Ukraine.

In the context of preparations for the NATO Summit in The Hague, the Deputy Prime Minister noted that Ukraine sought reliable security guarantees for a sustainable and just peace and expected the Allies to be ready to engage in dialogue based on the decisions of the Washington Summit on the irreversibility of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

Olha Stefanishyna presented the priorities of the adapted Annual National Programme for 2025, which took into account NATO recommendations, and thanked the Allies for their proposals on further steps to strengthen Ukraine’s interoperability with the Alliance.

The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the discussion of the implementation of NATO recommendations on the defence procurement system would continue at the next meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Defence and Security in February.

“There is a common understanding that maintaining the full functionality of Ukraine’s procurement agencies is a key priority. Further consultations with Allies scheduled for February will aim to strengthen the institutional capacity of Ukraine’s defence procurement system,” she said.

During her visit to NATO Headquarters, Olha Stefanishyna met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The parties discussed, among other things, the state of implementation of the decisions of the NATO Washington Summit on Ukraine.

The Deputy Prime Minister also met with the Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Boris Ruge and the Assistant Secretary General for Operations Thomas Goffus.
