MCIP updated the list of decisions on relocation or dismantling of monuments in the framework of decommunization and de-russification

The cleansing of the Ukrainian space from soviet-era and russian symbols began with the "Lenin’s fall" and continues to roll through the country. Due to the full-scale invasion of the russian federation in Ukraine, the processes of decommunization and de-russification have significantly intensified. The public's demand for the dismantling of russian and soviet monuments and the renaming of streets is urgent.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy continues to receive inquiries from local authorities regarding the dismantling and relocation of monuments, bas-reliefs, and memorial plaques. MCIP supports the aspirations of communities and calls on local authorities to prepare and submit quality documents in accordance with the procedures established by law.

The MCIP has now decided to remove monuments to soviet-era figures from the state register. This means that certain monuments can be moved or dismantled.

It will be recalled that in order to ensure that the processes of overcoming the consequences of russification and totalitarianism took place in a lawful manner, an Expert Council on decommunization and de-russification was established within the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. This advisory body develops recommendations and summarizes practices for clearing public space of monuments and other objects designed to consolidate russian propaganda narratives in Ukraine.

Also earlier, the MCIP together with the UINR (Ukrainian Institute of National Remebrance) prepared key information on the legislative framework for decommunization and de-russification processes.
