As of 13 September, the volume of gas injected into Ukraine’s underground gas storage (UGS) facilities by foreign traders amounted to more than 1.8 billion cubic metres.
According to Minister of Energy German Galushchenko, this was made possible in part by the certification of UGS facilities to European standards, which is an important step towards creating an energy hub in Ukraine.
“European underground gas storage facilities are about 94% full. This makes Ukrtransgaz’s gas storage capacities even more attractive for European traders. This is a good sign for us and for Europe, because together we are strengthening the continent’s energy security,” said German Galushchenko.
It is worth noting that Ukraine has the largest gas storage facilities in Europe – more than 30 billion cubic metres, of which about 15 billion cubic metres can be offered to European partners.
Last week, the USAID Energy Security Project published a report on a stress test initiated by the Ministry of Energy and modelled by an international group of experts. It found that Ukraine’s gas transmission system and underground storage facilities were ready to operate successfully in the face of military challenges and in the event of a disruption of russian gas transit.
