  • Dmytro Kuleba summed up the results of the Munich Сonference: The world univocally stands with Ukraine
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, posted 20 February 2022 16:45

The participation of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian delegation in the Munich Security Conference demonstrated that against the background of Russia's aggressive actions, Ukraine's international partners univocally stand by Ukraine both in words and in concrete actions.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba told about that while in Munich during a conversation with Facebook users.

"Yesterday and today I was asked if I still can see a window for diplomacy, if diplomacy can work and stop the negative scenario. My answer is yes. Yes, we can see what is happening on the front, what Russia is doing. But diplomacy continues to work. We have agreed with our key partners on the steps we will take to keep Russia on the diplomatic track," the Minister said.

In particular, Dmytro Kuleba reminded that a meeting between the US Secretary of State and the Russian Foreign Minister is scheduled for next week, as well as telephone conversations between world leaders and the Russian leadership. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced an initiative to convene a summit of permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Ukraine, Germany and Turkey to discuss the security situation.

"I assure you that we will use every, even the slightest opportunity to keep Russia in the framework of diplomacy and our partners support us in that," he stressed.

At the same time, Dmytro Kuleba reminded that Ukraine was preparing for any scenarios: "Ukraine is stronger now than ever. We continue to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and prepare for tough sanctions against Russia."

The Minister voiced the large number of diplomatic contacts the President of Ukraine had held in Munich. Among those are meetings with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson, Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz, Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris, Prime Minister of Bulgaria Kiril Petkov, with whom President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a declaration on Ukraine’s European perspective. This is the eighth such declaration, i.e. almost a third of EU countries have already confirmed the committment to support Ukraine's application to join the European Union.

"Yesterday, in all my meetings with European colleagues and in my speech at a public event, I said very simple words: Colleagues, it is time to give Ukraine a European perspective. It is clear that Ukraine will be a member of the European Union." This must be done now. This will be a clear signal to Russia: no matter what you do there and no matter what provocations you resort to, Ukraine is a European state in all senses and will be a member of the EU," the Minister stressed.

Dmytro Kuleba noted that this would be a signal to the Ukrainian people as well: no matter how Russia tries to turn history back, Ukraine and the Ukrainian people will be part of a large European family.

"Now is not the time for doubt. It's time to make a decision. A difficult situation cannot be solved without difficult decisions. We call on the partners to reject hesitations about Ukraine's future membership in the EU," he said.

In addition, Dmytro Kuleba told about more than a dozen of his meetings with foreign counterparts at the 58th Munich Security Conference. Among those are talks with the US Secretary of State, participation in the Group of Seven ministerial meeting, the Normandy Troika ministerial meeting, meetings with the foreign ministers of Canada, Georgia, Great Britain, Ireland, Romania, Northern Macedonia and Kenya. On the second day, talks were also held with the foreign ministers of Australia, Belgium, Liechtenstein and Norway.

The Minister stated that following the talks, Liechtenstein had decided to join the Crimean Platform and would become the 48th member state of this format.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister reminded that he was leaving Munich for Brussels, where he would take part in an important meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday.
