During a working visit to Sumy region, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal presented awards to employees of the State Emergency Service in the region. For their bravery and courage, the rescuers received Cabinet of Ministers’ certificates and other distinctions.

“The Sumy region faces relentless enemy attacks daily. Yet, day or night, rescuers promptly arrive at the sites of strikes. They tirelessly clear rubble and assist the wounded,” the Prime Minister emphasised, commending their life-saving efforts and tireless work.

Additionally, Denys Shmyhal paid tribute to those killed in a russian missile attack on 13 April. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Kuleba, Head of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development Serhii Sukhomlyn, and Head of the Sumy Regional State Administration Oleh Hryhorov.

That day, a ballistic missile strike on civilians claimed 35 lives, including two children. Civilian buildings and public transport were targeted. In one bus, people were trapped, but 13-year-old Kyrylo Illiashenko, despite his injuries, escaped the burning vehicle and opened the doors, saving other passengers.

Denys Shmyhal met with the boy, thanked him for his courage, and presented him with a watch from the Prime Minister of Ukraine, noting that his actions demonstrated remarkable bravery.

“In the person of Kyrylo, I also thank all our young Ukrainians for their brave deeds and love for Ukraine. Thanks to such youth, our country has been, is, and will continue to be. You inspire us and the entire world,” the Prime Minister stated.
