New Ukrainian police to be accountable to the public - Parliament supports Government's bill

On Thursday, May 21, the Verkhovna Rada has approved and adopted the Government bill "On the National Police". The corresponding reform of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine aims to improve the quality and efficiency of the police and increase the level of confidence in the law enforcement structures of the country.

According to Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, who presented the bill at the Parliament, after reforming the National Police of Ukraine will consist of criminal and patrol police, security police, special police and special tasks police OSRC (Operational and Sudden Response Corps).

Arsen Avakov noted that under the provisions of the bill, the main tasks of the National Police are reduced to preventive and prophylactic activity, detection and investigation of crimes and misdemeanors, providing help those who need it.

To ensure a transparent selection of the staff, it was defined the powers of created police commissions with participation of public representatives.

To minimize the risks of corruption and to monitor the quality of work, it was provided public participation in disciplinary commissions as well. In addition, the police become accountable not only to the Government, but also the public.

"All this aims to increase confidence in the law enforcement structure and effectiveness of police activity," Arsen Avakov underlined.
