Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Channel 5: Reduction of gas deliveries from Russia to the EU is a serious alarm for EU

Russia's actions with
regard to cutting gas supply to the EU member states is a very important
alarm for the European Union, said the Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy
Yatsenyuk in an interview with Channel 5 on Friday, September 12. "We have
declared for dozens times that Russia plans to begin with Ukraine and will
end in the European Union. Hence, what was done by Russia yesterday, when it
reduced 10% gas supply to the European Union countries, is a very important
alarm for the European Union", - he stressed. "What will
happen? You'll see that in 5-10 years this will lead to the situation when
Europe will try to do everything possible to refuse Russian gas. The way
Ukraine started doing everything possible to reduce its dependence on Russian
gas", - said the Prime Minister. The Head of
Government reminded that Ukraine had cut by 30% its gas consumption:
"There are objective and subjective reasons. A subjective reason is the
war in the East, as the industry consumes less. An objective reason is people
began to use less gas. Everyone responded with the national and patriotic
spirit: we are not going to pay money to the Russians, as then for these
funds Russia buys tanks and comes to our Donetsk and Luhansk". He noted that
Ukraine had almost accumulated 17 billion cubic meters: "Out of 25
billion cubic meters of gas, we were buying from Russia, 15 are now bought
from the European Union member countries". "We need 5
billion cubic meters of gas more to get through the winter. If we make full
use of all the production capacity of the European Union, it will be very
difficult, but we will pass the winter through" said Arseniy Yatsenyuk. The PM stressed the
need for austerity: "Much will depend on temperature regimes. We'll have
to see when to start the heating season, whether to extend vacations in
schools and universities, how to build the work of public authorities. We
have to overcome this winter. And we will succeed".
