First phase of modernisation completed at the Porubne–Siret Border Crossing Cargo Terminal

The first phase of the modernisation of the cargo terminal at the Porubne–Siret international road border crossing point on the Ukraine–Romania state border has been completed.

The project is now moving to the next stage, which includes equipping the terminal with modern customs and border control facilities.

The project is being implemented with the support of the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), one of the key financial instruments for developing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). Its objective is to strengthen transport connectivity between Ukraine and the European Union, improve the efficiency of border infrastructure, and develop international logistics corridors.

“The modernisation of the Porubne–Siret border crossing point is part of our systematic efforts to develop border infrastructure and integrate Ukraine into the European transport network. It is important that the expansion of the crossing is carried out in parallel on the Romanian side of the border. Only this will allow us to fully increase its capacity. On our side, we are already preparing for the next stage – the construction of the cargo terminal,” said Serhii Derkach, First Deputy Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine.

During the first phase of the modernisation, the engineering infrastructure required for the operation of the expanded cargo terminal was completed. This included the construction of cement concrete pavement, drainage and wastewater treatment systems, the installation of a Border Guard Service pavilion, a stationary radiation monitoring system, external lighting, and other supporting infrastructure.

The project also envisages the construction of four additional entry lanes for freight vehicles entering Ukraine, the introduction of modern technological solutions for customs and border control, and the development of a dedicated waiting area for trucks.

Upon completion of all project phases, the Porubne–Siret border crossing point will obtain a capacity to accommodate a significantly higher volume of freight traffic, reducing border crossing time, improving the efficiency of international logistics, and strengthening Ukraine’s transport integration with the European Union.

The project is being implemented on a 50/50 co-financing basis through a European Union grant under the CEF programme and funding from the State Budget of Ukraine. The works are coordinated by the Ministry for Restoration, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine and the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, with the support of the European Commission and the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). The project is funded by the European Union.
