Yulia Svyrydenko: Government adopts measures to strengthen protection of cultural heritage during wartime
At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, a number of important decisions were adopted in the field of cultural heritage protection during the full-scale war, Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko announced.
In particular, the Government approved the procedure for establishing the boundaries and usage regimes of protection zones around cultural heritage sites.
“It is now possible to define individual land-use regimes for areas surrounding heritage sites, including building height limits and development conditions. The new resolution allows for the designation of protection zones that best safeguard heritage sites while also enabling reconstruction and new construction without harming cultural heritage,” Yulia Svyrydenko noted.
The Cabinet of Ministers also improved the implementation mechanism of the eVidnovlennia programme for damaged and destroyed cultural heritage sites.
According to the Prime Minister, heritage sites will be subject to a unified inspection procedure and a simplified package of documents for carrying out restoration works. A mechanism is also being introduced to officially recognise a heritage site as destroyed as a result of the war, enabling residents of such buildings to receive housing certificates under the eVidnovlennia programme.
“russia is deliberately destroying heritage sites, museums and cultural institutions in an attempt to erase historical memory and the link between generations. That is why protecting cultural heritage and supporting culture are strategically important for Ukraine during the war,” the Prime Minister stressed.
