The development of the institute of prefects is important in terms of bringing services closer to the people, as well as the presence of authorities in all settlements of Ukraine. This was announced by Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development Viacheslav Nehoda during a meeting with representatives of the All-Ukrainian Association of Prefects to discuss the activities of prefects and the functioning of prefects districts.

“In the process of community consolidation, residents of small settlements were worried that their interests would not be taken into account when resolving local issues. The task of the prefect is not only to be a representative of the residents of a particular district and to develop it, but also to help people and local authorities to create a sense of unity in the community. In addition, a significant number of services are getting closer to the citizens, and in the settlements there is a connection with the central government. This is a governance mechanism and needs to be further improved, both at the legislative level and directly within the communities. According to the latest data, as of January 2022, communities continue to optimize the parameters of prefects districts and 7,606 prefects have been approved in them,” Viacheslav Nehoda stressed.

It should be noted that the event was initiated by the public organization All-Ukrainian Association of Prefects. Heads of prefects districts, representatives of the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development, as well as legal experts from the Office to Support Decentralization Reform joined the event.

The participants of the meeting discussed the prospects of approving the standard Regulations on prefect, conducting of military registration by them, the possibility of cooperation of prefects with community police officers, the provision of notarial services and more.

As a reminder earlier the Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Chernyshov noted that the obligation of the prefect is to take care of the needs of every inhabitant within the community.
