The Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft Decree of the President of Ukraine "On the Decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine" On the Strategy of Biosafety and Biological Protection ".

"Today's decision is of utmost importance for a comprehensive settlement of biosafety and biological protection. In particular, solving the problem with the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their impact on the environment and human health. Also, the uncontrolled spread of invasive alien species of flora and fauna that threaten and cause damage to the environment and other areas of economic activity, "commented Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Roman Abramovsky.

The document aims to:

to shape an effective national system of biological safety and biological protection of the population and objects of the natural environment;

ensure control over the spread of GMOs and protect the population from its illegal distribution;

to create a system of early response to invasive alien species of flora and fauna and rapid response to the spread of pathogens of dangerous diseases;

counter the manifestations of bioterrorism.
