The Cabinet of Ministers has authorised the State Emergency Service of Ukraine to act as the National Coordinator of Ukraine's participation in the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
The relevant resolution was adopted at a Government meeting on 10 May 2024.
The decision will help ensure Ukraine's full participation in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. It also provides a legal basis for further work in this area.
As is known, the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism is a system of cooperation between the EU Member States and 10 countries participating in the Mechanism (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine), which aims to prevent, manage and respond to emergencies in the EU and beyond, in particular by providing coordinated international assistance.
The civil protection mechanism is administered by the European Commission and is regularly activated to respond to various emergencies within and outside Europe.
Since the beginning of russia's full-scale armed invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been providing comprehensive emergency assistance to Ukraine.
As a reminder, on 20 April 2023, Ukraine officially joined the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The relevant agreement was signed between the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko and EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič.
