Innovation is the engine that makes the economy advanced, competitive and able to overcome any challenges. This was stated by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the presentation of the Global Innovation Vision of Ukraine.

The Head of Government noted that leading countries were investing huge resources in innovation. Ukraine also has ambitions to join the club of innovative countries.

“Innovation has a clear practical meaning. In defence, it means more enemies destroyed and more territories liberated. In social policy, it means effective rehabilitation of the wounded, both military and civilian. In mine clearance, it means the rapid removal of russian landmines and the return of land to agricultural production. In public services, it is the absence of bureaucracy and corruption and the availability of any service within a few clicks. In education, it means preparing children for the realities of a changing world in which they can constantly improve and succeed. Finally, an innovative society means a high quality of life for everyone,” said the Prime Minister.

According to Denys Shmyhal, the Government sees Ukraine in 2030 as a state where innovation is the basis of the economy and national security. And now one of the cornerstones is being laid – the Strategy for Innovative Development.

“It is based on three principles. The first is the development of the Ukrainian innovation ecosystem. It is about creating conditions for the free generation and circulation of ideas. It is about supporting research institutions, innovative start-ups and technology companies. The second is a multifaceted government policy to support innovation, from deregulation to national programmes. The third is to stimulate innovation and the development of technologies that solve pressing problems of the present and the future,” the Head of Government said.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government has already developed a number of draft regulations to support innovation in Ukraine. The main thing, he said, is to remove bureaucratic obstacles that hinder the initiative.

“We need to create a competitive market where anyone with talent and ability can implement their business project and contribute to economic growth. We have huge potential,” said Denys Shmyhal, adding that Ukraine already has promising start-ups in the medical technology sector.

In his opinion, there will be more such innovations. They are especially needed for the treatment and rehabilitation of military personnel and wounded civilians, to help them return to active economic and social life.
