  • Ukraine is studying Finland's experience in air quality monitoring

    Representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine are currently in Helsinki studying Finland's experience in air quality monitoring.

    The study visit is dedicated to the implementation of European approaches in this area in Ukraine in accordance with Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC.

    “Finland remains a reliable partner of Ukraine in creating an environmental monitoring system. We value the experience of our Finnish colleagues who have already successfully passed this way in their country. We also have our first pilot projects - as part of institutional cooperation with the Government of Finland, a fixed observation point that meets the requirements of European standards will be installed in Kyiv region. This will help to inform Ukrainians about the state of air quality in accordance with EU Directives,” commented Viktoriia Kyreeva, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

    As part of the training, Ukrainian representatives have already visited the Finnish Meteorological Institute to learn about the methods of

    • monitoring and management of air quality in the EU;
    • measurement and requirements for the location of observation points;
    • modeling in the field of air quality, including using satellite data.

    The Finnish experts spoke about the role of chemical laboratories and the national reference laboratory in the national monitoring system, as well as the functions of the Finnish Ministry of the Environment in managing air quality.

    The study visit of Ukrainian representatives is organized within the framework of the EU TAIEX technical assistance and is a continuation of the TAIEX expert mission that took place in October 2023.
