Ukraine and Moldova strengthen cooperation in education and science on the path to the European Union

On January 26, during a working visit, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Andrii Vitrenko, held an official meeting with Minister of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova Dan Perciun, in Chisinau.

The parties discussed common tasks and challenges in the fields of education and science in Ukraine and Moldova on the path to European integration, in particular, the negotiation process for accession to the European Union and practical steps to implement EU legislation in the fields of education and science into national legislation.

They focused separately on cooperation in preparation for the associated participation of Ukraine and Moldova in the EU's Erasmus+ program, in particular, on the exchange of experience and coordination of efforts to build institutional capacity to ensure a smooth transition to the new status in Erasmus+, which Ukraine plans to implement by 2028.

Andrii Vitrenko thanked the Moldovan side for its consistent support of Ukraine in the context of the full-scale russian invasion and the creation of temporary examination centers for NMT sessions, and expressed hope for further cooperation, in particular on the restoration of the educational process in the frontline territories of the southern region: Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, as well as the city of Kyiv, ensuring equal access to quality education, and supporting teachers and students in accordance with European standards. During the meeting, key areas of bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova in education and science were also discussed.

The Deputy Minister highlighted the issues of meeting the educational needs of the Ukrainian community in Moldova, in particular, the need to support Ukrainian-language educational institutions, update outdated Ukrainian-language textbooks and other teaching materials, improve the quality of training and professional development of teachers of Ukrainian language and literature, increase the number of state-funded places for Ukrainian students in higher education institutions, etc.

The parties confirmed their readiness to continue joint work towards satisfying the educational needs of the Ukrainian community in Moldova and the Moldovan community in Ukraine.

The meeting was another step towards strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova in the fields of education and science.
