  • Ukraine and Moldova agree on new steps in cooperation to protect water resources of the Dniester

    A regular meeting of the Dniester Commission was held in Chisinau. As a result, the Commission's co-chairs, First Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Olena Kramarenko and State Secretary of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Moldova Gheorghe Hajder, signed a protocol on further cooperation between the two countries to protect the water resources of the Dniester.

    As part of the agreements, Ukraine and Moldova:

    - approved the work plans of the Commission's working groups for 2024-2025;

    - continued monitoring the waters in the river basin, exchanging information on the state of the waters, and assessing their chemical and ecological condition;

    - agreed to further exchange information on the state of water resources in accordance with the Cooperation Programme between the State Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Moldova and the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre for 2021-2025;

    - discussed the screening of the legislation of Ukraine and Moldova in the field of water monitoring for compliance with European directives.

    The next meeting of the Commission is scheduled for Ukraine at the end of 2025.

    In addition, the OSCE representative was briefed on the progress of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) project "Development of Transboundary Cooperation and Integrated Water Resources Management in the Dniester River Basin". The meeting participants recommended speeding up the completion of this important project.

    As a reminder, Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and Sergiu Lazarencu, Minister of Environment of the Republic of Moldova, discussed environmental safety, environmental damage caused by the war, and outlined key areas of cooperation between the two countries on the sidelines of the COP29 Climate Summit.
