Ukraine and the European Commission discuss the implementation of climate and environmental commitments within the framework of European integration
Ukraine’s progress in meeting European integration benchmarks, the development of climate policy, and the conservation of biodiversity were the key topics of a working meeting between the Ukrainian delegation and representatives of the European Commission.
The meeting brought together Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, and senior officials from the European Commission’s Directorates-General: Fabien Porcher of DG CLIMA (Climate Diplomacy), Marcela McAndrew of DG ENV (Environment), and Sanni Koljonen of DG ENEST (Enlargement).
“We are systematically working to fulfill our European integration commitments in the areas of the environment and climate. It is important that this dialogue with the European Commission allows us not only to assess progress but also to agree on further practical steps,” noted Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi.
The parties discussed the status of implementation of key EU integration benchmarks, in particular, biodiversity conservation and waste management, issues of monitoring and reporting on their achievement, as well as further steps in this direction.
Special attention was paid to the creation of a national emissions trading system as one of the key instruments of climate policy and Ukraine’s integration into the European climate space. The Ukrainian side emphasized the importance of applying a zero rate under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) for Ukraine during the initial phase of its implementation.
Following the meeting, the parties acknowledged the progress made, agreed to hold a separate briefing session on outstanding issues—including potential transition periods—and agreed to continue their cooperation.
