Ukraine shifts to a new stage of increasing capacity for gas imports from Poland
Ukraine’s gas transmission system operator has received approval from the NEURC to implement a joint project to increase capacity on the cross-border interconnection with Poland. This decision marks a new phase in expanding natural gas imports from the European Union and will facilitate Ukraine’s further integration into the European energy market.
On July 6, 2026, a joint auction for the increased capacity will take place on the GSA (Gas System Auctions Platform).
The project provides for the auction-based allocation of two levels of increased capacity, determined as part of a market demand assessment:
Level 1 — 6.98 million cubic meters per day during the gas years from 2030/2031 to 2044/2045;
Level 2 — 10.20 million cubic meters per day in the gas years from 2032/2033 to 2046/2047.
Further implementation of the project will depend on the auction results and passing an economic test. If demand is confirmed, OGTSU and the Polish operator GAZ-SYSTEM will move to the practical phase—the development of the relevant infrastructure.
The project has received simultaneous approval from the Polish regulator (URE). This is an important signal of support from European partners and a prerequisite for the implementation of cross-border infrastructure solutions.
Increasing capacity in the Polish direction:
- expands Ukraine’s access to gas from the European market;
- reduces dependence on risky supply routes;
- enhances the flexibility and reliability of the power system in wartime conditions.
The development of the interconnector is also in line with the long-term strategy for integrating the Ukrainian and European gas markets.
