NATO officers learn from Ukraine’s combat experience in unmanned systems, electronic warfare, and intelligence: Ministry of Defence

Ukrainian military personnel with combat and training experience shared their expertise with officers of the Armed Forces of Poland and Germany.

The NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre (JATEC) held a series of seminars on applying Ukraine’s lessons from modern warfare to command-and-control procedures and decision-making processes.

Ukraine’s experience for NATO

Through theoretical classes and practical exercises, the participants examined the impact of unmanned systems, electronic warfare (EW), and intelligence support on modern tactical operations. 

The seminars became yet another opportunity for direct interaction between Ukrainian and NATO military personnel, allowing them to compare operational experience with existing doctrinal approaches.

The expertise provided demonstrated the importance of rethinking existing assumptions about manoeuvring, command and control, and the employment of forces in a technologically driven operational environment.

NATO-Ukraine: building interoperability 

One of JATEC’s priorities is transferring Ukrainian combat experience and assessing its applicability to NATO’s military education, training, and tactical planning processes.

JATEC support for the Captains’ Training course

The three-week event took place in Lublin, Poland, at the premises of the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade (LITPOLUKRBRIG), which provided the infrastructure for the seminars.

The seminars were held as part of the JATEC project in support of the Captains’ Training course. The project aims to facilitate the exchange of operational experience at the tactical level between the Armed Forces of Ukraine and NATO. 

Since 2022, the Come Back Alive Foundation has supported the implementation of the Captains’ Training course in Ukraine, providing the necessary conditions for participants’ training and accommodation.

Officers learn TLP (Troop Leading Procedures) to plan unit operations at the company level, as well as MDMP (Military Decision Making Process) for decision-making at the battalion staff level.

As previously reported, more than 1,100 tactical-level officers have been trained in Ukraine through the Captains’ Training course since the start of the full-scale war.
