At the UN climate conference, COP29, held in Baku (Azerbaijan), Ukraine was among 31 countries that confirmed its intention to develop nuclear power in the near future. In addition to Ukraine, the United States, France and the United Kingdom also reaffirmed their intentions to triple nuclear power capacity by 2050.
"For Ukraine, the development of nuclear power is a strategic task. During the war, nuclear power proved its reliability and critical importance for Ukraine. Today, NPPs cover about 60% of electricity consumption in the country and are the backbone of our power system. Our task is to continue the development of nuclear power together with our partners, including the development of additional generating capacities," said Roman Andarak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
Currently, the state-owned company NNEGC Energoatom is implementing a number of projects to build additional nuclear generation capacities, in particular at industrial sites of operating NPPs.
These include the completion of Khmelnytskyi NPP Units 3 and 4 with a total design capacity of 2.2 GW, as well as additional units at Rivne and Khmelnytskyi NPPs using the technology of the US company Westinghouse.
