Food security is one of the fundamental points of the Peace Formula initiated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Maintaining agricultural production and continuity of exports are important conditions for preventing world hunger, as Ukrainian food is a source of food for 400 million people worldwide.
This was emphasised by Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, during a session on food security at the first Global Peace Summit.
"The blockade of sea routes in the Black Sea, an unprecedented jump in international wheat prices, mining of Ukrainian agricultural land - the direct losses from the war for agriculture are enormous. Even so, we managed to restore export logistics and maintain agricultural production. The forecast for this year is improving - 76.1 million tonnes of grains and oilseeds. The country's capacity to transport goods is also quite high. In April, Ukraine exported 9.6 million tonnes of cargo by sea. This is very close to the figures for February 2022," said Yuliia Svyrydenko.
At the same time, she said, the food security structure is still fragile - russia continues to attack infrastructure, storage facilities, and the energy system.
Yuliia Svyrydenko stressed that under no circumstances can freedom of navigation be blocked. According to the First Deputy Prime Minister, the panelists supported Ukraine's proposals in terms of food security.
The communiqué of the first Global Peace Summit included a paragraph on food security, which stipulates that global food security depends on the uninterrupted production and supply of food. In this regard, free, full and safe merchant shipping, as well as access to seaports on the Black and Azov Seas, are of utmost importance. Attacks on merchant vessels in ports and along the route, as well as on civilian ports and civilian port infrastructure, are unacceptable. Food security must never be used as a weapon.
In total, the first Peace Summit in Switzerland addressed three points of the Peace Formula - nuclear security, food security and the humanitarian dimension - the release of prisoners and deportees (military and civilian, adults and children).
Work on other points of the Peace Formula is ongoing. In general, it is expected that a joint Action Plan for the implementation of the Formula will be created for each of its points.
