The Summer School on International Humanitarian Law for Civil Servants has been launched. The event was attended by representatives of members of the Interagency Commission on the Application and Implementation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in Ukraine. The event was opened by Iryna Vereshchuk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories.
The Summer School on International Humanitarian Law was organised by the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in partnership with the Danish and British Red Cross.
It aims to address current issues related to the application of international humanitarian law, to establish coordination and cooperation in the field of IHL in Ukraine, and to disseminate knowledge of IHL among civil servants.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the understanding and practical application of international humanitarian law was extremely important for Ukraine during the full-scale armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine. Indeed, the enemy is violating all possible norms of IHL – both conventional and customary – on a daily basis.
“I hope that the results of the Summer School will be reflected in regulatory initiatives both at the level of national legislation and at the level of international law. Ukraine is currently suffering greatly from violations of IHL. Therefore, Ukraine will be among those who will radically update international humanitarian law,” said Iryna Vereshchuk.
