Nuclear and uranium cooperation and sanctions against rosatom: meeting between German Galushchenko and U.S. Senate Energy Committee Chairman Joe Manchin
Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko held an online meeting with Chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Senator Joe Manchin.
The key topic was the situation at the russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP and the measures taken by Ukraine at the international level and, in particular, at the IAEA to ensure nuclear and radiation safety at the facility.
The parties paid special attention to the risks associated with the blowing up of the Kakhovka HPP, the denial of access to ZNPP for qualified Ukrainian personnel and the expiration of the lifetime of nuclear fuel loaded into its reactors.
“We need to make real decisions and take concrete actions to impose sanctions against the russian nuclear industry. We must force russia to leave not only the occupied ZNPP, but also the global nuclear technology and uranium markets,” the Minister said.
The Chairman of the U.S. Senate Energy Committee expressed support for Ukraine in its fight against the russian aggressor and assured of the U.S. readiness to help strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and independence.
In this context, the parties discussed the importance of deepening cooperation in the nuclear and uranium industries in order to oust russia from global markets in these segments.
As a reminder, the U.S. Congress recently held hearings on imposing sanctions against rosatom, where German Galushchenko made a statement about the russian company’s direct involvement in planning and financing the armed aggression against Ukraine.
Ukraine insists on imposing sanctions against the russian nuclear industry in connection with the violation of the basic principles of nuclear and radiation safety by the aggressor and rosatom personnel during the military operations in Ukraine and, in particular, the occupation of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe – Zaporizhzhia NPP.
