Ministry of Health: Okhmatdyt marks completion of restoration work on its medical and diagnostic complex

The medical and diagnostic complex at the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Specialised Hospital has been fully restored following major repairs. The complex was damaged in the russian missile attack of 8 July 2024.

Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko attended an event marking the completion of the restoration work, alongside representatives of the hospital and state institutions, donors and specialists involved in the project. Participants toured the restored premises and reviewed the completed work.

“First and foremost, I thank the hospital team, who did not stop working for a single day after the attack and continued to fulfil their most important mission: saving children’s lives. Today, we see the result of an enormous collective effort – a fully restored complex that continues to operate and provide patients with the care they need,” said Minister of Health of Ukraine Viktor Liashko.

The medical and diagnostic complex is one of Okhmatdyt’s principal buildings. It provides children with highly specialised surgical and cancer care, complex operations, intensive care, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapy. The building also houses an oncohaematology laboratory and other specialised hospital units.

Importantly, the complex remained operational throughout the restoration. Repairs were carried out while the hospital continued to function, including during a difficult winter and amid power cuts. This allowed essential medical care for children to continue alongside the restoration work.

The major repairs were financed by the Okhmatdyt – Healthy Childhood Charitable Foundation using charitable donations. A total of UAH 272.1 million was allocated to the restoration.

The international engineering company Eptisa and specialists responsible for technical and design supervision were also involved in the project. They supported and monitored the work throughout every stage of the restoration.

The restoration was a joint effort involving the hospital team, donors, designers, engineers, contractors, technical and design supervision specialists, and representatives of state institutions.

The Okhmatdyt medical and diagnostic complex was damaged on 8 July 2024 during a large-scale russian missile attack. One missile struck the hospital, destroying the toxicology building and damaging four others. Two people were killed, 32 were injured and more than 600 children were evacuated from the hospital. Despite the extensive damage, Okhmatdyt continued to operate.

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine continues its systematic work to restore healthcare infrastructure damaged or destroyed as a result of russian aggression. Restoration work is underway across the country.
