  • Ministry of Youth and Sports starts publishing lists of russian and belarusian athletes who support the war
Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, posted 19 April 2023 23:10

We have started publishing lists of russian and belarusian athletes who support the war. This was announced by Andriy Chesnokov, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine for European Integration, on the air of the Yedyni Novyny (United News) telethon.

He said that the Ministry of Youth and Sports had been working on proposals for personal sanctions against certain representatives of the youth and sports sector of the russian federation who had encroached on the territorial integrity of Ukraine even before the full-scale invasion. However, this process is long and requires meticulous work, including by Ukraine's law enforcement and security agencies.

According to him, due to a partial change in the IOC's position on the admission of russians and belarusians, the Ministry is helping national sports federations to counteract the return of russian and belarusian athletes to international sports competitions. According to the IOC rules, all athletes from russia and belarus who are members of sports clubs of the Ministry of Defence or security structures are automatically considered to be supporting the war.

"This data was published in various other public sources. And we decided that it would be better if there was such a page on the website of the Ministry of Youth and Sports in English," said Andriy Chesnokov.

He also noted that a Twitter account had been created to share information about athletes from aggressor countries who support the war. This data will be used by partners who support Ukraine's position to prevent russian and belarusian athletes from entering international sports arenas until the war against Ukraine ends.

"National sports federations are now sending letters to international sports federations, and other public associations and sports media are publishing such lists. We decided that this should become part of our public work," said Andriy Chesnokov.
