German Galushchenko discusses strengthening cooperation in human rights protection with ECHR President Mattias Guyomar
During a working visit to Strasbourg, Minister of Justice of Ukraine German Galushchenko held a meeting with the President of the European Court of Human Rights Mattias Guyomar. The parties discussed strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the ECHR, the status of implementation of the Court’s judgments, and further steps to bolster the human rights protection system amid the ongoing armed aggression by the russian federation.
The Minister informed the ECHR President about specific measures Ukraine is taking to enhance human rights guarantees. These include the implementation of the Penitentiary Reform Strategy, the opening of new penal institutions, the establishment of commissions to review complaints about inadequate conditions, and the improvement of legislation to introduce effective legal remedies.
Particular attention was paid to Ukraine’s interstate cases against russia, which concern systemic and mass human rights violations in the occupied territories since 2014.
“The European Court of Human Rights is one of the key institutions standing guard over rights and freedoms. Ukraine continues to implement ECHR judgments even in wartime, strengthening its legal system. We greatly value the Court’s efforts in handling interstate and individual cases related to russian aggression. Ukraine remains committed to enhancing international mechanisms of accountability and protection of fundamental human rights,” emphasised German Galushchenko.
The meeting marked an important step in developing interaction between Ukraine and the European Court of Human Rights. The parties reaffirmed their shared goal – to strengthen the rule of law, ensure justice, and guarantee the inevitability of accountability for human rights violations.
