Europe continues to move towards neutralising russia’s influence on European countries in the energy sector.
“The disconnection of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the russian-belarusian energy system is a significant event for the whole of Europe. russia, which has always used energy resources for its own political purposes, is losing its influence on the energy sector of European countries. Such steps deprive the aggressor of the opportunity to use the electricity sector for blackmail and political games,” said Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.
The power systems of the three Baltic countries are currently operating in an isolated mode. On 9 February, the Baltic system will be connected to the European ENTSO-E and synchronised with the continental European power grid.
As a reminder, Ukraine cut off its power grid from the russian and belarusian power grids on 24 February 2022, a few hours before the start of the full-scale russian invasion. After 21 days of isolated operation in the face of enemy seizure of energy facilities and constant attacks, the Ukrainian power system proved its resilience and was urgently synchronised with the European ENTSO-E grid on 16 March 2022.
