Ministry of Energy: 1.4 GW of gas-fired generation commissioned in Ukraine since the start of full-scale invasion
As of the beginning of February, Ukraine has commissioned 1.4 GW of distributed gas-fired generation – 1.1 GW connected to the electricity grid and 0.3 GW installed to meet own needs. In January this year alone, 192 MW of new capacity was brought online.
Almost 60% of the existing capacity has been built by private investors, with the remainder constructed by state and municipal enterprises using their own funds and international donor assistance. Within the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, projects with a total capacity of 196 MW have been implemented in communities, including frontline areas.
Currently, around 3 GW of new projects are at various stages of implementation. The key target for this year is to fully cover the consumption of critical infrastructure facilities in every region using distributed generation.
In the proposed amendments to the Strategy for the Development of Distributed Generation up to 2035, the Ministry of Energy has set a target requirement for 2.2–2.7 GW of additional guaranteed generating capacity, broken down by region.
The Ministry continues to take measures aimed at simplifying regulatory and technical requirements for project implementation, attracting international assistance, and providing technical support to accelerate the development of gas-fired generation in Ukraine.
