Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture: Ukraine and Sweden agree to simplify accreditation procedures for verifiers

Ukraine and Sweden have agreed on approaches to simplify the accreditation procedures for verifiers under the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

This will enable Ukrainian exporters to verify greenhouse gas emissions data in line with the requirements of the CBAM Regulation and to use actual data instead of default inflated values.

The changes were discussed at a working meeting involving Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, representatives of the Swedish Board for Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (SWEDAC), and officials from the European Commission.

The Swedish partners expressed strong support for Ukraine and proposed a flexible cooperation mechanism. SWEDAC is ready to accredit Ukrainian verification bodies, drawing on the technical base and expertise of the National Accreditation Agency of Ukraine (NAAU).

“This decision makes it possible to overcome logistical obstacles related to the inability of foreign experts to visit Ukraine under martial law conditions. We are creating a precedent whereby international accreditation will be carried out in close cooperation with our national body. This will significantly speed up the process for our industrial enterprises and preserve their competitiveness in the EU market,” noted Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi.

The parties are now moving on to the legal aspects of cooperation. It is expected that as early as next week, specialists from NAAU and SWEDAC will hold the first technical consultations to agree on the regulations for joint work.

The joint efforts of the Ministry, European partners and national regulators are aimed at ensuring that Ukrainian businesses have all the necessary tools for seamless trade with the European Union under the new environmental standards.
