Ukraine's demolition waste is already comparable to the amount of solid waste generated in the country on average per year. Much of it can be used for further reconstruction of the country.
This was emphasized by Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, during a conference call on Ukraine's rapid recovery chaired by the Prime Minister of Ukraine and attended by the heads of regional military administrations.
Among the issues discussed was the situation with demolition waste in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions.
"The amount of debris in Ukraine due to russia's military aggression is already comparable to the amount of solid waste generated in the country on average per year. This is about 10-12 million tons. Although, obviously, we will be able to announce the final figures only after all our lands are liberated from the occupiers," Ruslan Strilets emphasized.
According to him, the Government has already established a clear algorithm for what and how to deal with such waste. Therefore, it is important that the regions organize this work properly. The Minister cited the example of the Kyiv region, which was the first to pilot the implementation of the Government-approved procedure for the management of demolition waste. The regional authorities have set up 62 temporary sites for the storage of such waste. Currently, 48 of them are in use. They have already stored 144 thousand tons of war waste.
The mechanism works as follows: communities bring destruction waste to temporary storage sites, where it is then sorted, hazardous waste and construction waste are separated, etc. Construction waste is shredded for reuse.
"The efficient organization of work in Kyiv region has helped to attract international partners who are willing to help with modern technologies, equipment, and implementation of specific solutions," the Minister said.
Clearing the territories from war waste continues in other de-occupied territories as well.
"For our part, we are ready to help the regions, advise and synchronize efforts. Thus, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources is constantly negotiating with international partners to provide Ukraine with the necessary assistance - mobile crushers for construction waste, equipment for actual disassembly and sorting, etc. After all, our goal is to ensure that the waste of destruction does not go to a landfill, but is used rationally during the restoration of our country. And it (recostruction - ed.) will certainly take place and will be substantial," said Ruslan Strilets.
