Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources enhances cooperation with Denmark on water management and technology implementation
Ukraine’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Svitlana Grynchuk, and Denmark’s Minister for Environment and Gender Equality, Magnus Heunicke, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between their respective ministries.
“We have a long history of collaboration with Denmark, including on water supply for Ukraine’s southern regions and supporting our path towards European integration. To formalise and solidify our cooperation, we agreed with our Danish partners during COP29 in Azerbaijan to develop this official document. Today, in Poland, during an informal meeting of Environment and Climate Ministers from EU member states, we signed the Memorandum,” Svitlana Grynchuk wrote on her Facebook page.
Under the Memorandum, efforts will be intensified in the following areas:
- Establishing a modern water resource monitoring system in Ukraine, including groundwater. Given the significant loss of water resources and ongoing threats due to the war, strengthening this area is critical for Ukraine to access up-to-date data and make swift management decisions. Denmark is ready to support Ukraine in this effort;
- Restoring and modernising water supply and wastewater treatment infrastructure. Denmark is prepared to share expertise and assist in developing effective strategies and implementing innovative solutions and technologies;
- Pollution control. In collaboration with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, we are already working on initiatives to create effective mechanisms for monitoring industrial and agricultural polluters.
Additionally, during the bilateral meeting, discussions covered Denmark’s support for reforming Ukraine’s water sector in line with the best European standards, as well as the importance of engaging the private sectors of both countries to attract new investments in water infrastructure development.
“I am grateful to the Danish Government and people for their solidarity with Ukrainians and ongoing support. We will continue to exchange knowledge, best practices, and data, while jointly seeking innovative solutions that I am confident will become new success stories in our partnership,” Svitlana Grynchuk noted.
