An international mechanism has been launched in The Hague to pay compensation to Ukrainian citizens whose property was damaged by russian aggression. Starting from April 2024, they will be able to apply for compensation for damage caused by the russian aggression. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine Iryna Mudra in a commentary to Voice of America.

“It will be possible to apply to the register as early as April. The categories of victims and categories of damage have already been approved by the registry board and must be certified by the conference of the parties, which will be done in April,” the Deputy Minister said.

Iryna Mudra reminded that a compensation commission would be set up under a multilateral international agreement to consider each individual case. Subsequently, management bodies will be established to identify sources of funding.

According to the Deputy Minister, it will take at least a year for this mechanism to become operational, as all organisational procedures must be followed.

“That is, it will take at least a year, as the relevant international law must be observed. Therefore, unfortunately, no matter how much I would like it, we cannot say that it will be possible to receive compensation tomorrow, but we are working on it to make it work so that people will eventually have a place to go to receive compensation for damage,” she stressed.
