The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine hosted a meeting with representatives of the International Energy Agency led by Talya Vatman, Caspian and Black Sea Programme Manager. The meeting was attended by Deputy Ministers of Energy of Ukraine Svitlana Hrynchuk, Mykola Kolisnyk and Roman Andarak.
The Ukrainian side briefed the IEA representatives on the current situation in the power system due to massive hostile attacks on energy infrastructure facilities.
“For more than three months now, the enemy has been systematically attacking our energy sector, including thermal and hydro generation, as well as transmission system facilities. The total losses amount to about 9 GW of capacity, and due to a significant shortage of generation, we are currently forced to restrict electricity supply to consumers. We are actively carrying out repair work at all facilities to be restored and working to increase distributed generation capacity as much as possible,” said Svitlana Hrynchuk.
The IEA representatives, in turn, emphasised their readiness to cooperate in preparing a programme for decentralising electricity generation in Ukraine and strengthening the resilience of the power system.
Particular attention was paid to projects that can be implemented in the shortest possible time and taking into account military and security threats.
In addition, the meeting participants discussed the importance of increasing the capacity of cross-border interconnections for electricity imports to Ukraine from European countries.
